A Wispr Flow alternative makes sense when price, offline use, phone apps or open-source code is the sticking point, and the right one depends on which. This guide matches each need to the apps that meet it, Talkativ among them, with facts dated 5 November 2026.

Wispr Flow is one of several AI dictation apps. They all do the same basic job: you press a shortcut in any app, talk, and your words are typed where your cursor is. What differs is price, where they run, whether they work offline, and what they add on top.

Everything about other apps below is dated 5 November 2026. Prices and features change, so check Wispr Flow’s pricing page before you pay for anything.

One detail on the free plans: Wispr Flow’s homepage says 2,000 words a week. Its help centre says the desktop app warns you at 2,000 and only blocks you above 5,000. Talkativ’s Free plan stops at 2,200 words until the 7 days are up. For every Wispr Flow plan and what a year on each costs, see Wispr Flow pricing, plan by plan.

Wispr Flow alternative for Windows

Wispr Flow has a Windows app, so Windows is not a reason on its own to switch. If you work on a Windows PC and want the same press-talk-paste routine at a lower price, Talkativ does it on Windows 10 and 11. Press Ctrl + Space on Windows, ⌥ Option + Space on a Mac, speak, press again, and the text lands in Gmail, Word, Slack, a browser or a code editor.

On a Mac, you can download Talkativ today. Read more on the pages for Talkativ on Windows and Talkativ on Mac.

Free and open-source Wispr Flow alternatives

If price is the main reason you are looking, start with Talkativ’s free plan: 2,200 words a week, no card.

If you want free software whose code anyone can read, Handy is free and open source under the MIT licence, and its GitHub page says it works fully offline on macOS, Windows and Linux (checked 5 November 2026). Spokenly says its local models are free forever with no word cap and no account. We have not used either, and we cannot tell you how well they work on your computer.

When Wispr Flow is the better choice

Pick Wispr Flow if:

  • you want dictation on your phone as well as your computer
  • your workplace asks for SOC 2 or HIPAA paperwork, which Wispr Flow lists and Talkativ does not claim
  • you want a team or company plan, since Wispr Flow lists Growth and Enterprise plans and Talkativ has Free, Pro and Max only

How Talkativ works

  1. Click into any text box.
  2. Press Ctrl + Space on Windows, ⌥ Option + Space on a Mac, or click the small mic dot on your screen.
  3. Talk the way you normally would. You do not need to say “comma” or “full stop”.
  4. Press again to stop. Your words appear where your cursor is, moments later.

It is press to start and press to stop, not hold to talk. The shortcut keys are fixed, so you cannot change them.

Who should not choose Talkativ

Being honest saves you a download. Talkativ is not the right pick if you need a phone app, if you need to dictate with no internet connection (it does not work offline), if you want to transcribe audio files, or if your employer asks for security certificates that Talkativ does not claim. In those cases, one of the other tools may serve you better.

What Talkativ adds

  • A free plan with no card. 2,200 words a week, in every app, with Vocabulary and Advanced formatting included.
  • Vocabulary on every plan. Add a name or a company word once and Talkativ spells it your way.
  • A searchable history. Every dictation is saved, so you can find it, copy it or reuse it later.
  • Genius Mode and Smart Edits on Max. Highlight text, press Ctrl + D on Windows, ⌥ Option + D on a Mac and say what you want, such as “make this friendlier”. Smart Edits rewrites text in 31 writing styles.
  • No voice training. You press the shortcut and talk.
  • 100 languages, highly accurate in 56. Talkativ can also work out which language you are speaking.
  • A founder who answers. Talkativ is built by one person, who made it for his mum after her stroke. You can read the story.

Advanced formatting (numbered lists, money symbols, email addresses, times) is off until you switch it on in Settings. Punctuation and capital letters come by default. It is on every plan.
