Why speak a prompt instead of typing it
A good prompt is long. You give the background, what you have tried, what you want back and what to avoid. Typing all that is slow, so many prompts end up short and vague.
Saying it is closer to briefing a colleague. You can talk through the context in the order it comes to you, and the AI gets more to work with.
ChatGPT speech to text, step by step
Click into the message box and press Ctrl + Space on Windows, ⌥ Option + Space on a Mac. Speak your prompt, then press it again. A moment later your words are typed into the box, with punctuation and capital letters added and “um” and “uh” left out.
Nothing is sent until you press send. You can read the prompt, fix a line, add a sentence, then send it. The mic dot at the bottom of the screen shows red while it listens, blue while it works and green when your words have landed.
Speech to text for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and more
Talkativ is not connected to any one AI tool. It types wherever your cursor is, so you use it the same way in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity or Cursor, and in any other app with a text box. If you use more than one assistant, you learn one shortcut and keep it.
Voice chat is a different thing
A voice chat with an AI is a spoken conversation: you talk, and it replies out loud. Talkativ does something else. You speak, and your words become typed text in the message box. You see exactly what will be sent, and you can edit it first.
If you want a spoken back-and-forth, use the assistant’s own voice chat. If you want to write a careful prompt with your voice, use Talkativ. You can use both.
Vocabulary for product and tool names
AI prompts are full of names: a product, a library, a client, a colleague. Add the ones you say most to Vocabulary and Talkativ listens out for them, so they usually come out the way you wrote them. It is on every plan, including Free. It is a word list, not voice training, so give a long prompt a quick read before you send.
Rewrite a prompt with Genius Mode
On the Max plan, Genius Mode lets you highlight text you have already written, press Ctrl + D on Windows, ⌥ Option + D on a Mac and say what you want, such as “make this shorter” or “turn this into a bullet list”. The result replaces your selection. It is useful for tidying a rough prompt before you send it.
What to know first
- It needs an internet connection and does not work offline.
- Press once to start and once to stop. It is not hold to talk.
- The shortcuts are fixed. You can click the mic dot instead.
- It can mishear unusual words, so read before you send.
- It is a dictation app, not a voice assistant. It does not answer you or press send.
Try it on your next prompt
The Free plan gives you 2,200 words a week, with Vocabulary and Advanced formatting included. See the free plan or pricing for the rest. Talkativ runs on Windows, and the Mac app is ready to download. If you write code as well as prompts, see voice typing for developers. Writing longer pieces? See dictation for writers.
Download Talkativ and say your next prompt.
