Google voice typing not working: fixes

If Google voice typing is not working, the cause is usually the browser, the microphone or where you are trying to use it. This guide goes through each in order, on Windows and Mac computers.

Work through the fixes below in order. They are for Windows and Mac computers; for phone steps, see Google’s own help pages. If you have not turned voice typing on yet, start with the step-by-step Google Docs guide.

Fix Google Docs voice typing in five steps

  1. Check you are in Google Docs. Google’s help page, read on 6 November 2026, names Google Docs, plus speaker notes and captions in Google Slides. It lists no other places.
  2. Check your browser. Google says voice typing works with the latest versions of Chrome, Edge and Safari. Update yours if it is old.
  3. Allow the microphone in the browser. In Chrome: the three-dot menu, then Settings, then Privacy and security, then Site settings, then Microphone. If the site is under “Not allowed to use your camera or microphone”, select it and change the microphone to Allow (Google’s microphone page).
  4. Allow the browser on your computer. Google’s Chrome page says your computer’s own settings may also need the microphone switched on. On a Mac, that is System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone; on Windows, Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Our guide to voice to text not working has both, step by step.
  5. Check the microphone itself. Make sure it is not broken, is plugged in and is not being used by another program. Adjust its input volume, or plug in an external microphone. If none of this helps, restart the computer.

Steps 1, 2 and 5 come from Google’s voice typing help page; steps 3 and 4 from the Chrome page above.

Google Docs voice typing not working: what else to try

Google also suggests a quiet room, speaking slowly and clearly, and pausing before and after each command. If a command such as “bold” or “select all” does nothing, remember that Google says voice commands work only in English, with both your account language and your document language set to English. Spoken punctuation, such as “comma”, might not be available in every language either.

Small things that are easy to miss

The microphone is muted in the computer’s sound settings. A headset is plugged in but not chosen. A video call is still using the microphone. The browser is out of date. Work through them once, slowly, and test after each change by clicking the microphone box and saying one sentence.

If you use more than one browser, try the same document in another one from Google’s list: Chrome, Edge or Safari. If it works there, the problem is the first browser, not the microphone.

“Cannot be used for this field”

People search for this message. We could not find it on Google’s help pages, so we cannot tell you what triggers it, and we will not guess. What we can say is that Google names Docs (and Slides notes and captions) as the places voice typing works. Try the five steps above inside a plain Google Doc.

When Google voice typing keeps failing

Google voice typing lives inside one product. That is its limit: a different page, app or field is simply outside what Google describes. If you keep running into that, a dictation app that types into any app avoids the problem. Our full comparison is on Google voice typing alternative for any app.

Talkativ is that kind of app, for Windows and Mac. Click into any text box, press Ctrl + Space on Windows, ⌥ Option + Space on a Mac, talk, and press again to stop. Your words appear at the cursor.

It has limits. It needs the internet, has no offline mode, cannot transcribe an audio file, has no phone app, and the shortcut is fixed. Press once to start and again to stop; it is not hold to talk. It also needs the computer’s microphone permission switched on, and that is a computer setting: Talkativ cannot switch it on for you. There is no microphone picker in the app yet, so it uses your computer’s default microphone.

If Google voice typing does what you need inside Docs, keep using it, and use Talkativ for everything outside.

Questions

The short answers. More questions

Start with the browser (a recent Chrome, Edge or Safari), then the microphone permission in the browser and on your computer, then the microphone itself. Also check you are inside a Google Doc, since Google's help page names only Docs and Slides speaker notes and captions.

No. Google's help page, read on 6 November 2026, lists the latest versions of Chrome, Edge and Safari.

We could not find that message on Google's help pages, so we do not guess at its cause. Check you are in a Google Doc, or in Slides speaker notes or captions, and try the steps on this page.

Google's help page does not give a reason. To carry on, click the microphone again, or say "resume", one of the English voice commands Google lists.

Google's page does not list other apps. Talkativ types into any app where you can type, on Windows and Mac computers.

Speak. It’s written.
